The Odia film industry is deeply saddened by the death of one of its most legends, Uttam Mohanty, who passed away on 27 February 2025 at 66. His demise indicates the end of an epoch in Odia film’s evolution and development, which was largely facilitated by his remarkable accomplishments.
Uttam Mohanty was born on December 23, 1958 in Baripada, Mayurbhanj district of Odisha. From a young age, he showcased tremendous interest in the performing arts. He went to Maharaja Krushna Chandra High School and furthered his education at Maharaja Purnachandra College in Baripada. During college, he was active in dramas and other college events which shows that he had a bright future ahead in acting.
Mohanty’s initial career path was in chartered accountancy, and this took him to Ludhiana and Kolkata for further studies. However, the acting bug got the best of him, and he moved back to Odisha. He made a remarkable entry in 1977 with the Sadhu Meher directed film ‘Abhiman’. The film’s success gave him the boost he needed, and helped him get into the forefront of Odia cinema.
A Tremendous Career Spanning Several Decades
Uttam Mohanty’s charm and multi-faced personality helped him achieve the landmark of 135 Odia films, 30 Bengali films and a Hindi feature “Naya Zaher.” He captured the attention and affection of every classified age group. Some of the most notable renditions were done in films such as ‘Nijhum Ratira Sathi’ (1979), ‘Phula Chandana’ (1982), ‘Jhiati Sita Pari’ (1983), and ‘Danda Balunga’ (1984). These films not only highlighted his talents but also helped in fostering the golden age of Odia cinema.
Apart from Mohanty himself, his onscreen image was further enhanced by his association with reputed actresses of the time like Mahasweta Ray and his spouse, Aparajita Mohanty. On 17 May, 1987, Uttam got married to his co-star Aparajita bringing their off-screen romance onto the screens, making them one of the most beloved couples in the industry blessed with several box-office marvels along with mind-blowing performances.
Achievement Outside the Film Realm
Apart from his renowned film career, Uttam Mohanty made television appearances in famous serials such as Sara Akasha which he also played a major role in. His diversification into the small screen extended his reach and showcased his range as an actor.
These skilled Mohanty had a developed passion for the arts that extended to nurturing and showcasing the talent Odia’s culture had to offer. Uttam Mohanty has received several awards during his lifetime for what was vouched as exceptional talent. In 1999, he received the most valued Jayadev Puraskar which was awarded for high auspicious contributions towards adds in Odia cinema. Along with this, he won the best actor in the Odisha State Film Award for his performances in: “Phula Chandana,” “Jhiati Sita Pari,” “Danda Balunga,” “Suna Chadhei,” among others. In 2012, he further was awarded the Odissia Living Legend Award which established him as a pillar of the industry.
Final Days and Legacy
Mohanty’s final days were filled with suffering after he was diagnosed with a form of liver cirrhosis. For intensive medical treatment, he was shifted to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram after being checked into a local private hospital in Bhubaneswar during shooting of “Bou Butu Bhoota” on the 8th of February 2025. Despite best efforts by the medical staff, Mohanty died on the 27th of February. He surely will be remembered as the man who strove to make a difference.
Uttam’s wife, Aparajita, and son, Babushaan Mohanty, who is becoming a renowned Odia film actor, are among his immediate survivors. It is clear that those who take an interest in the film industry and movies will be deeply impacted by Uttam’s work long into the future.
“Uttam,” a title bestowed upon him as a mark of respect which literally means “The Best,” has contributed to the world of cinema and has done so much more than simply changing the perception of Odia Films – he has changed the perception of the people as well. Through painstaking dedication, an Odia film’s worthy place in a viewer’s heart is secured forever, assuring that all we can do is wait and continue the legacy of this classic artist.
Constituents, fans, and the general populace paid tribute to and mourn his passing. In his statement, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi empathically said, “He will always be remembered as a leading light in the Odia Film industry and the undisputed hero of Odia cinema for decades.” While Mr. Mohanty’s demise has a great impact, overcoming the Odia community, none will ever forget a leading figure of art and Odia cinema.
There shall be full state honors during his cremation. Other prominent officials shared their point of view, Mohanty made an everlasting mark in the region’s culture.
